Johan Thörnkvist is an illustrator who captures the beauty of a moment and the brightest side of our life, bringing back wonderful childhood memories. His pictures are an engaging fusion of emotional reflection, telling stories with soul, humor and melancholy. Beyond this Johan also works in advertising, making commercial stories look more funny and stylish. We are happy to publish our interview with Johan!
L: Please, tell us about how and when you decided to make art your career?
JT: Im not sure that it is my career. I work in advertising by day and the things I make are for other people. The paintings I make are just for and from me and I don’t really care if I make any money on them.
L: The surrounding world plays a huge part in your brilliant artwork. Can you tell that the surrounding and everyday life have the main influence on all your art?
JT: I guess, I like to pause and look at everyday scenes and imagine what could exist in that space instead.
L: What are your other interests or unique talents beside art work?
JT: I play disc-golf with my friends when i get chance, but I am not that good at it. I also like to travel and stuff :).
L: What does friendship mean for you?
JT: Accepting someone for who they are and trusting them to do the same for you.
L: Who is your favorite writer? Why do you like his/her books?
JT: I love Douglas Adams and Erlend Loe. Also Astrind Lindgren and A.A. Milne was very important for me growing up. But I mostly read crappy crime novels and comics for relaxation.
L: In your opinion what can be more powerful than “the joy of creativity” for a creative person?:)
JT: Love and grief.
L: And our special question:) Imagine that you are sweets, what kind it would be and why?
JT: I think that would be filidutter. Its my favorite candy, it starts out being salty, then sweet, then sour. Maybe I would like to think of myself as complex :)
Thank you Johan!
